Improved understanding of Cydia pomonella biology in Croatian apple production systems

Associate Professor Katarina Mikac is an ecologist specialising in tracking the movement patterns of threatened and invasive species. Katarina does this using a suit of ecological methods, including population genomic methods. Katarina has extensive international experience working on invasive insects and has published widely in this field.

Katarina and her colleagues have been working on key aspects of codling moth biology, ecology and genetics for over a decade. The overall aim of their research has been to document the codling moth’s change in distribution, abundance and movements patterns. And also, the change in its population genetics, phenotype and behaviour (wing shape and size) in Croatia. A deeper understanding of multiple aspects of the codling moth ecology, biology and genetics will enable data driven management decision to be made for this significant insect pest. The impetus for this research is for the data collected to lead to improved control practises and management of codling moth in Croatia.
